When delivering bad news, you want to position yourself as equal to the other person. You want to sound confident and assertive. Being assertive is expressing your needs clearly without fearing the other personâs reaction. Assertiveness is being respectful of the other person but isnât looking to them for approval, permission, or validation. An assertive negotiator knows what they want and is prepared to ask for it. And contrary to what your ego will tell you, being assertive will not hurt your relationship with the other side or your chances for a successful negotiation.
